International Green Purchasing Congress 2006 (2006/10/26)

Venue: Chiang Chen Studio Theatre, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, HKSAR, China

Under “A Policy Framework for the Management of Municipal Solid Waste (2005-2014)”, which was published in December 2005, the HKSAR Government pledged to develop and adopt a green purchasing policy. This policy is intended to give direction and guidance to governmental officials in the selection, purchase and use of “green products and services” i.e. products and services produced, offered and usable in a sustainable manners without unnecessary sacrifices on quality of life or the environment.

Under this premises, the Green Council is now organizing the International Green Purchasing Congress 2006 (IGPC) with the goals of promoting sustainable consumption and assisting industrial and manufacturing sectors businesses in planning and implementing eco-innovations and product-based technological advancements. The scope of the Congress will be at cover a broad and general level rather than being limited to business-to-business interactions. Through the Congress, the local business community, industrial companies, and their counterparts in Mainland China, will be benefited from the stimulation for and guidance in the application of eco-innovation, environmental performance improvements, and sustainability practices. More broadly, this Congress will have significant benefit for both the Hong Kong business community and the general public.

OBJECTIVES

This international Congress will provide a platform for presentations, discussion and exchanges of knowledge and opinions on recent green purchasing initiatives and advancements both locally and around the world. Focus will be put on the following essential aspects:

  • Successful green procurement/purchasing policies and initiatives of various governments around the world
  • Benefits for the public and private sectors of establishing green purchasing
    networks and implementing green purchasing strategies/initiatives
  • Proven methods for implementing green purchasing, including identification of common challenges and strategies to overcome these challenges
