In the 1990’s, the International Organisation for
Standardisation (ISO) created a series of guidance
standards for different types of environmental labelling and symbols, including one for the Type I environmental performance leadership ecolabels (i.e. ISO 14024). At a recent meeting in Columbia, there was considerable debate about whether this standard, as well as the related ones, should be revised or even merged together. The GEN position has always been and remains that the
current ISO 14024 standard is more than adequate as a thoughtful and relevant guidance document.
Consequently, GEN officials don’t see a need to initiate and make significant changes, and fear that any changes may actually reduce the relevance and value to actual Type I environmental labelling practitioners.
